An ovulation test is a qualitative test used to predict when ovulation (the most fertile time of the month for a woman) occurs.
Since ovulation only takes place once a month, the knowledge of when this happens is of great help to a couple trying to conceive. The test works by indicating when there is a surge in LH (luteinising hormone) levels, predicting that ovulation is likely to occur. Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary. The egg passes into the fallopian tube where it is ready to be fertilised. In order for conception to take place, the egg must be fertilised by sperm within 24 hours after its release. Immediately prior to ovulation, the body produces a large amount of the LH. This is known as the “LH surge” and usually takes place about 14 days before the end of a menstrual cycle. LH triggers the release of an egg from the ovary. By identifying the “LH Surge” a woman can pinpoint when she is most likely to become pregnant. Know when it is your time.
